name of Assistant Engineer Robertson. He however is about to

proceed to England on leave of absence, and Mr.May intends

with my concurrence to attach him for a time to the Liverpool

Fire Brigade for a course of instruction .When he returns

to HongKong his qualifications will be taken into account in

arranging for the appointment of a permanent Assistant Su-

perintendent.

II. I do not recommend that Mr.May should be

required to relinquish the $360 per annum which he has drawn

since the amalgamation took place. If he does so,his salary

will no longer be equal to the salaries paid to the Colonial

that Treasurer and the Police Magistrate, and to be provided for

the Registrar-General.

The extra expense to the Goverment if

all my recommendations meet with your approval will not be

morethan $30 a month, the amount which I suggest should be

paid to the Second Assistant.

I have the honour to be,

sir,

Your most obedient

humble servant,

Huvay

GOVERNOR &C.
